General Information

Hypertension

What is Hypertension?

Hypertension is the increase in pressure inside the blood vessels; the literal meaning is high blood pressure. Hypertension damages the blood vessels. It can cause serious illnesses such as stroke, heart attack, heart failure and kidney failure.

How Did My Doctor Decide That I Had Hypertension?

When systolic blood pressure is 140 or above or diastolic blood pressure is 90 or above, hypertension is considered. When your blood pressure is high, you may experience complaints such as headache, shortness of breath, and chest pain. However, the only way to understand that you have hypertension is to have your blood pressure measured.

What Causes Hypertension?

Hypertension is seen as xxx in some families, so it may be familial (hereditary), but this is not certain. Many other conditions can cause hypertension. Some of these are: diabetes, obesity, inactivity, excessive alcohol use, eating very salty, very fatty and high-calorie foods (pastries, sweets), eating less vegetables and fruits.

How Do I Prevent My Blood Pressure From Rising?

You need to change your lifestyle to prevent your blood pressure from rising and to prevent the discomforts it may cause. The main things you need to change in your life are as follows: If you are overweight, lose weight. If you drink alcohol, do not drink at all or reduce it. Exercise for at least 30 minutes 4-6 days a week, walk in the open air at least. Eat a balanced diet. Get into the habit of eating plenty of vegetables and fruits. Stay away from fatty and sugary foods such as pastries and desserts. Do not use animal fat and saturated fat (margarine). Do not add too much salt to your meals. But do not eat completely unsalted food either. Stop smoking. Drink less coffee and tea.

How Will My Doctor Treat Me?

Once your doctor has definitely determined that you have hypertension, he or she will investigate what is causing this disease. To do this, he or she will examine you, ask if there is a history of heart attack or stroke in your family, and have you do blood tests to check your blood sugar and blood cholesterol levels. Your doctor will then arrange your treatment. If your blood pressure is slightly high, he or she will ask you to follow the recommendations listed above, and if your blood pressure is higher or you have another disease, your doctor will prescribe medications for these.

Will I Be Able to Recover from This Disease?

There are more than 80 medications for hypertension. 9 out of every 10 patients who use their medications regularly benefit from these medications. If you follow our suggestions below, your condition will get better. Help your doctor and do not hide anything from him. Include your family in the things you will do; do sports (walking) with them, make sure they eat a regular diet like you, do not let them smoke. Have your blood pressure measured regularly or have it measured and write it on the chart on the back of the form and show it to your doctor. Take your medications regularly. If you do everything your doctor tells you but you think your complaints are not going away, tell your doctor. Do not abandon your doctor's recommendations even if your blood pressure drops to normal. If your doctor does not say anything to the contrary, go to your doctor for a check-up every 3-6 months.
