Radish Seed
Radish Seed
Radish Seed is the mature seed of the species Raphanus sativus L. (Cruciferae). This species is an annual plant with yellow flowers. Many varieties are grown for their roots or seeds.
The seeds contain a fixed oil (% 35-50) and a sulphur glycoside called glycorphanin. This glycoside gives, on hydrolysis, a mustard essence with germicidal action.
Although it is not well known in Europe, it has found a wide use in Ottoman medicine. It is found in many compounds (pastes). It has stimulant, appetite stimulant, bile remover and antimicrobial effects.
The preventive effect of radish against epidemic diseases has been known since ancient times. We know that during the construction of the Cheops Temple in Egypt, the workers were fed radish along with onion and garlic to protect them from epidemic diseases.
