Juniper Seed
Juniper Seed is from the Pine family. The common name of the Juniperus genus, which is about 70 tree or shrub species that do not shed their leaves in winter, is juniper. Junipers are widespread throughout the Northern Hemisphere and some species grow in our country. Here we will talk about the most relevant species to our subject, the European Juniper or Common Juniper (J. communis), which is widespread in Europe and Turkey.
The plant, which we will briefly call juniper, can grow up to 15 m tall but is often seen as a bush. Its fragrant leaves are needle-like when young and have a crocheted appearance when mature. Its flowers, which bloom between February and April, are yellowish green and do not attract attention. Juniper is a dioecious plant. In other words, male and female flowers are on separate trees.
The female flowers produce cones with dark purple fruits in the fall. However, these turn light brown when fully mature. Cones contain 1-12 seeds. The plant reproduces by the seeds shed from the cones or by the rooting of the branches that touch the ground. Juniper likes sunny places but is not picky about soil. It finds water by taking deep roots in dry soil.

Juniper cones contain volatile oil, natural sugars, flavone glycosides, resin, tannins and organic acids. These cones are used to add flavor and aroma, i.e. spice, to some foods and beverages under the name of juniper berries. The wood and leaves of some juniper species are distilled to obtain juniper essence, which is used in the perfumery and pharmaceutical industries.
Those with kidney disease and pregnant women should not use juniper.
