It is an itchy and contagious skin disease caused by the scabies mite, which is so small that it is hard to see with the naked eye, called cercoptic, burrowing under the epidermis.
Severe itching and line-shaped wounds are seen especially on the hands, wrists, between the fingers, underarms, abdomen and buttocks.
The first thing to do is to wash all the laundry, clothes, bed linens and sheets of the patient and those he or she has been in contact with.
Scabies is caused by a small insect that lives and reproduces in the calloused or toothed layer of the skin. Scabies starts with a rash in the form of small blisters or pimples, especially between the fingers and on the elbows. It is especially itchy at night. Except for babies, itchy areas are always the areas below the neck. The most affected areas are the hips, genitals, nipples, fingers, wrists, elbows and knees. After a short time, the desire to itch causes itching marks and wounds that can become infected. If all or some people living in the same house have been itching for days or weeks, it is most likely due to scabies. Scabies spreads quickly from person to person.
Treatment:
1. Carefully follow the medications and recommendations given by your doctor.
2. Apply the cream or lotion given to you to all parts of your body from the neck down, including the genitals. Do not forget to apply the medicine to any hidden areas such as under the fingernails and toenails, between the toes and under them.
3. Leave the medicine on for 24 hours without showering or bathing. Wear the same clothes during this time.
4. After 24 hours, take a warm bath and wash off the medicine. Change all your clothes and underwear and wash all your bed linens. Normal washing is enough to kill all the scabies mites.
5. All scabies in the house should be treated at the same time. Some may have scabies but the itching may not have started yet. If your child who goes to school or nursery has scabies, inform his/her teacher and ensure that the other children in the school are checked.
6. Repeat the treatment one week after the first treatment to kill any newly hatched scabies mites. After successful treatment, itching may continue for another 1-2 weeks. Do not apply too much scabies cream as this may cause further irritation.
7. For babies under 12 months of age, definitely consult a doctor and do not apply the above mentioned methods.
