General Information

Pharyngitis

The pharynx is the part between the tonsils and the voice box. Therefore, pharyngitis is another name for a disease called sore throat. It can be acute or chronic. Acute pharyngitis is caused by either a bacteria (beta-streptococcus) or a virus. Beta-streptococcus disease is also called strep throat. The chronic form can be caused by a persistent sinus, lung or mouth infection and spreads to the sinuses.

Symptoms:

- Sore throat,

– Difficulty swallowing,

- Fire.

Also, drinking too much alcohol, smoking or breathing bad, smoky air are among the main causes.

Diagnosis

Your throat may become red and swollen, making it difficult to swallow and sometimes even breathe. Pus may also appear. You may feel a burning sensation in your throat. If these symptoms last more than a few days, see your doctor.

Your doctor will examine your throat and take a culture sample to send to a lab to determine if bacteria are causing the infection. He or she will also check for other illnesses, such as nasal and respiratory tract infections.

Treatment

Most cases do not require treatment. However, antibiotics may be given for pharyngitis caused by bacteria. Antibiotics are of no benefit for cases caused by viruses.

You should get plenty of rest, take aspirin or similar medication, and gargle with warm salt water several times a day. Lozenges may also provide relief.

You can avoid irritating your throat by eating soft foods.
