Liquid Propolis Antioxidant Power

Free radicals are a problem that we all have to deal with because they are natural byproducts of cellular metabolism. However, they can cause cellular mutation, cancer, and other chronic diseases. Fortunately, antioxidants can neutralize and eliminate free radicals from many different systems in our body, which is why a high antioxidant substance like propolis can be so valuable.

Antioxidant activity of propolis from various geographical origins

Propolis is a resinous substance collected by honeybees from various plant sources. The antioxidant activities of propolis from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China (Hebei, Hubei, and Zhejiang), Hungary, New Zealand, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay, the United States, and various geographical origins were compared. Ethanol extracts of propolis (EEP) were prepared and evaluated for antioxidant activities of EEP samples by io-carotene bleaching and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay systems. The main components in EEP were identified and quantitatively analyzed by HPLC analysis with photodiode array (PDA) and mass spectrometric (MS) detection. EEP from Argentina, Australia, China, Hungary, and New Zealand exhibited relatively strong antioxidant activities, and were also correlated with their total polyphenol and flavonoid contents. Propolis, which has strong antioxidant activity, contains antioxidant compounds such as kaempferol and phenethyl caffeate. Antioxidants work with the immune system to eliminate foreign invaders and slow the progression of free radicals.
