Ingrown toenail
An ingrown toenail is when the sharp tip of a toenail grows into the flesh of the toe, most often on the big toe. This can occur from toenails that are too curved, shoes that don't fit properly, or toenails that have been cut incorrectly. The tissue around the nail can become infected.
Symptoms: Pain, swelling, and redness around a toenail.
Treatment
If the tissue around the nail is infected, your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic and will also trim the nail from the edges of the nail that has grown into the finger (an easy in-office procedure). Warm compresses, an antibiotic, and rest may also be recommended.
Protection
To prevent chronic ingrown toenails, do not cut your nails too short; also cut them straight across rather than curved, to match the shape of your toes. Wear socks and shoes that fit properly and avoid excessive pressure on your feet and toes.
