It is obtained by steam distillation of basil leaves.
Basil Oil is a perennial, strongly scented, herbaceous plant with pinkish or yellowish-white flowers, 20-40 cm high. It is also known as basil. Its homeland is Iran and India.
Stems are erect, hairless or slightly hairy, many-branched and leafy. The leaves are opposite and have long petioles, and are pleasantly scented. The flowers are usually collected in 6-flowered cases in the axils of the upper leaves. The sepals and petals are tube-shaped and have 2 lips. The fruits are oval-shaped, small and shiny black.
Areas of use: The parts of the plant used are fresh flowering branches and seeds.
It carries volatile oil. This oil contains estragole, linalool, cineole and pinene.
