Chaste Tree Seed
Chaste Seed, Other names: Bitter ayit, Ayıt, Ayıd, Hayıd) is from the Vervain family. Chaste, whose homeland is unknown, grows in the Mediterranean basin countries and in Western and Southern Anatolia in Turkey. Chaste trees are shrubs that can grow up to 1-3 m tall. They have hand-shaped, segmented green leaves and small, light purple or bluish flowers that bloom in clusters throughout the summer.
The tiny, spherical fruits of 3 mm in diameter that form as these flowers mature are hard, fragrant and slightly bitter.
Chaste tree reproduces with the seeds in its fruits. It likes warm climates, fertile and wet soils. Since it is a very shameless plant, it insists on covering the area it is in.
It contains volatile and fixed oils, cine-ol, tannin, sugars, vitexin and crystalline substances called vitexinin and a glycoside called agnoside. Some of these substances are found in its fruits.
