Honeysuckle
Honeysuckle
( Lonicera caprifolium )
It is a 1-3 m high, hairless or slightly hairy climbing plant that blooms pinkish whitish-yellow flowers in May and July. The leaves are opposite-cross on the stem, leathery, hairless and the lower surface is slightly hairy. The lower leaves are short-stalked and ovoid, while the upper ones are united at their bases in a way that they wrap around the stem. The fragrant flowers form in the axils of the upper leaves, usually in bunches of three, with quite long stems and in a panicle type. The flowers are long-tubed and have hanging lips. It produces red grape-like fruits when ripe. In medicine, the leaves are used for gargling, the flowers as an antispasmodic, and the fruits as a diuretic and emetic.
