Pennyroyal

Pennyroyal

Yarpuz is from the Lamiaceae family. It is a very close relative of mint and grows naturally in wet meadows and stream banks in many regions of Anatolia. It is a hardy perennial herbaceous plant that can grow to 10-30 cm. There are two types that grow vertically or lying on the ground. It has hairy leaves that are lighter green than mint and purplish or pink flowers. The plant reproduces by the tiny seeds it sheds.

The volatile oil in the leaves of the pennyroyal is rich in a substance called pulegone. Known in the Mediterranean region since ancient times and known for its qualities, it is sold in markets in some places and used instead of mint.

Some of the medicinal effects of pennyroyal are similar to those of mint.
