LOCATIONS: It is found in broad-leaved, shady forests and mountains, at altitudes up to 1000 m.
STRUCTURE: Perennial herbaceous plant. Stem up to 40 cm high, 3-angled, garlic-scented, wrapped around the base with leaf lobe. Bulb is equilateral, covered with membrane. Leaves; 2 pieces, coming out from the base of the stem, elliptical spear-shaped, 5-20 cm long. Flowers are white, porous hemispherical, grouped in the shield at the ends of the stem.
KULLANILAN KISIMLAR:Soğancıklar kullanılır.Soğancıklar tohumların olgunlaşmasından sonra (Haziran-Ağustos aylarında) çıkarılır.Gölgede veya 40 dereceye kadar ısılı fırınlarda kurutulur.Kuru soğan; sarımsak kokulu ve yakıcı tattadır.Rutubet payı %16’dır.Torbalarda paketlenir.Gölgede, kuru ve havadar binalarda muhafaza edilir.
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION: (consisting of vinyl sulfide, allyl sulfide etc.) contains essential oil, vitamin C, traces of mercaptans, iodine, an aldehyde, polysulfides etc.
IN WHICH DISEASES IS IT USED: It has strong antimicrobial (bactericidal and bacteriostatic), worm-reducing and anti-sclerosis effects. It is used in leucorrhoea (caused by Trichomonas vaginalis bacilli), atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, worms and liver pain.
In folk medicine, it is used against stomach aches, gas, hiccups, boils, insomnia, shortness of breath, malaria, bronchitis, etc. Fresh onions are pounded into a poultice and applied externally to bruised and scabby wounds. It is used to wash white discharge. Bear garlic is effective against hair loss and rheumatism (rubbed on the skin). If boiled with 1/10 water, it is used to expel worms, etc.
USAGE: 1 coffee spoon of crushed shallot is soaked in 400 gr. of water for 1 hour. Take a tea glass 3 times a day before meals or 10 fresh onions are crushed well and mixed with 500 gr. of yoghurt. Take a tablespoon 3 times a day after meals.
Folk medicine recommends using the above and below ground parts of cultivated garlic (Allium sativum L.) against the same diseases.
