Datura/Tortoiseshell
Where it is found: It grows in all parts of the country.
Structure: Root is fusiform, white, trunk is up to 1m high, hollow, juicy, naked, upper half branches like a pitchfork, annual herbaceous plant. Leaves are long-stalked, deeply cut, pointed, dark above, light green below, only young leaves are densely hairy. Flowers are white, large, short-stalked, slightly 5-lobed calyx tubular, 5-lined, funnel-shaped corollas pleated and 5 stamens. Fruit is a cracking 4-part yellow-green to brown cone, large and thorny. Seeds are black, hard, wrinkled kidney-shaped.
Parts Used: Leaves are used. These are collected without stems during the flowering period (June-September). They are dried in the shade or in ovens heated to 40 dr. The upper surface of the dry leaves is dark green, the lower side is light green, slightly foul-smelling and slightly bitter. The moisture content is % 13. It is packaged in bales. It is stored in dry and airy buildings.
Chemical Composition: Atropine alkaloid, scopolamine, l-hiossiamine (turns into atropine when dried), tannins, potassium nitrate, etheric oil, carotene etc. Seeds contain about % 25 solid oils. Its composition includes (acids and glycerides of linol, olein, palmiti, stearin and lignos).
In Which Diseases Is It Used: It has sedative and analgesic properties. Datura leaves are used in folk medicine for whooping cough and simple coughs, shortness of breath, headache, nightmare, rheumatism, epilepsy, rush of blood to the head, convulsions (paralysis), meningitis, encephalitis (brain inflammation), podacra, nervous diseases, heart pains, hysteria attacks etc. The leaves or seeds are used to be kneaded in alcohol at a rate of (1/10) for rheumatic swellings and convulsions, and the leaves alone are used to be smoked like cigarettes for shortness of breath.
Usage: Boil one coffee spoon of the leaves with 400 gr. boiling water and wait for one hour. Take one glass three times a day before meals. 4-5 of the seeds are crushed and taken with water after meals.
