Hollyhock, the flowers and leaves of the plant mainly contain helmeli (mucus) substance and % 0.02 essential oil, vitamin C, etc. The roots contain % 35 helme (consisting of 8 hexoses and pentos, galacturonic acid, etc.), asparagine, betaine, sucrose, fatty substances, pectin, starch, etc.
In Which Diseases Is It Used: The plant has anti-inflammatory, emollient and expectorant effects. This is mainly due to the fact that it contains helical substances.
In folk medicine, it is used against cough, shortness of breath, hoarseness, gastroenteritis, heartburn and ulcers, kidney and bladder inflammation, difficulty urinating, leucorrhoea, diarrhea, dysentery, etc. Externally, it is applied as a poultice to boils and wounds, gargled for hoarseness, used as a compress for eye inflammation and for nipple sores in nursing mothers.
Usage: 1 tablespoon of the plant is kept in 0.5 lt. of cold water for 1 hour. The resulting liquid is sweetened with honey or nebet sugar and taken 4 times a day before meals.
It soothes the stomach and softens the intestines.
It is a diuretic.
It relieves colds, softens the chest and loosens phlegm.
Marshmallow is a sedative. It is good for ulcers in the mouth, throat and teeth. For these conditions, an infusion is prepared by taking 1-2 teaspoons of dried marshmallow leaves as described above, pouring 1 glass of boiling water over them and letting it brew for 10 minutes. Drink one glass of the infusion three times a day for its calming effect. Gargling with the same infusion is good for mouth ulcers.
"Also, marshmallow heals wounds on the body. For this, a poultice is prepared by crushing marshmallow leaves. This poultice is applied externally to wounds."
