Mullein leaves and flowers contain sticky plant fluid, saponins, volatile oil and flavonides and glycosides called verbascosides. The flowers, which contain abundant nectar, attract honey bees to the plant.

In Which Diseases Is It Used: The plant has an expectorant and emollient effect. Medicinal mullein flowers are used in cough, bronchitis, shortness of breath, whooping cough, liver diseases, hoarseness, tuberculosis, diarrhea, etc.

It is recommended to use it externally as a gargle for sore throats, (leaves) as a poultice for haemorrhoids, swellings, boils and earaches.

The medical effects of mullein, known in ancient times and mentioned in Homer's epics, and the methods of using them can be listed as follows:

It is an expectorant.
It softens the chest. It is curative in cases of bronchitis and chronic cough.
It has healing effects on respiratory tract mucosal infections.
It is a remedy for hoarseness and muffled voice.
It relieves abdominal pain caused by stomach flu.
It is a diuretic.
It is calming.
